Below is our recommended language for including vote tripling as a secondary ask into ballot chase scripts, as well as tips for making a strong ask no matter what.

Script

  1.  Follow script

Follow your organization or campaign’s script. The vote tripling ask is not the sole script component.

(2) Vote tripling ask (to IDed supporters)*

[Regardless if voter has mailed back their ballot]

Election Day is {# of days} away, (STOP 2 optout)* can you help get the vote out right now by also reminding 3 friends to {mail back their ballots or vote} as well?

[If Yes: record ‘yes’ as the response]

Great! Just because it helps to think it through, what are the first names or nicknames of the 3 friends you'll remind?

[If they share names: record data in the open text field ex. ‘your sister, John, and Nia’]

[If No: leave blank] Consider addressing hesitations (below), and asking again in a different way.

Best practices

  1. Make sure to ask the voter who they’ll remind. Ask for names or nicknames so they know they don’t have to share identifying names if they don’t feel comfortable. It’s only important for them to know who they’re reminding!

  2. Address hesitations that the voter may have using the list of common hesitations below

Common hesitations

1. Can’t think of whom to remind

No worries! Can you think of a family member, co-worker, or neighbor who can use a reminder?

2. Can’t think of three friends

No worries. If you can only think of two or one, that’s totally fine! You will still be helping get more people out to vote.

3. Doesn’t want to share names

I totally understand. I'm not trying to collect data. You can share initials or even nicknames, as long as you know who you’ll be reminding!

4. All their friends already vote

That’s awesome! I find that it can be nice to get a reminder from a friend just in case they’re really busy on Election Day or have something unexpected come up.

Recommended pre-loaded responses

Texters will come across commonly asked questions or hesitations with voters. You can preload these in your text platform so texters have easy access to responses.

1. Questions about polling place

You can look up your polling place here {insert link}

2. Wrong number

Thanks, and we'll update our records.

3. I’m voting for {your candidate/issue}!

Great! Thank you so much. Many supporters are also helping the campaign by reminding their friends and family to vote. Can you remind 3 friends to vote as well? A message from you will go a long way.

4. "We all already voted"

Thanks so much! A message from a friend is the best way to get someone to vote. Are there three others you can remind to vote (e.g. a neighbor, a family member, a coworker)?

5. "I already voted!"

Thanks so much for voting! Can you remind three friends to vote too?

6. "I already voted and got my friends to vote"

Thanks so much! It's thanks to supporters like you that we're really going to boost turnout this election. Are there three others you can remind to vote (e.g. a neighbor, a family member, a coworker)? {count them as a pledged tripler, but follow-up with them with a reminder message only if they say yes}
